One of the things that makes a quilt special is the quilting – especially if it is hand quilted.

As much as we hear about machine quilting and it’s true that many quilters love to machine quilt for a variety of reasons, there are still a lot of quilters – beginners and experienced quilters alike – who like to hand quilt.

Here are some articles that may help you get started with your hand quilting, or may be helpful in giving you some techniques for improving your quilting:

Just a line to thank you very much for your most interesting letters and generous tips re all aspects of quilting. (I have given my one and only sample hand sewn quilt to my daughter) and now enjoy planning and making blocks. This site I found today “How to quilt” a beginners guide to quilting – it’s great. (You’ve probably gathered I can type but am not very computer literate).

Hello there!!! I have just come across this site for hand quilting. I made my first quilt on the machine, each block was quilted and then sewen to the other blocks, and then bound. It really turned out great!! Now I am working on two quilt tops and I know how to start the quilting job, but I do not know what to do when my thread runs out. Do I tack it on the underneath side, or do I very discreetly try to tack it on the top side. Crazy question, I know, but I really do not know. All my families quilts were quilted by hand by my grandmother, and sadly, she is no longer with us. Please help.

      Greetings –

Excellent! The best way is to tie what is called a quilters’ knot and feed it back into the layers of the quilt.

Here’s a video that shows how it works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bh5Fg_JqJ-A
